How to pick a startup incubator

Several grants reach founders only through an incubator. Here is a plain checklist before you apply to one.

Why the incubator matters

Some schemes, such as the Startup India Seed Fund and many state seed-support schemes, are paid through selected incubators rather than directly. So the incubator you join can decide which grants you can reach.

Five things to check

  1. Which grants it runs. Ask which central or state schemes it is approved to disburse right now.
  2. Sector fit. Biotech, hardware and deeptech often need lab access; pick a centre that has it.
  3. Equity and fees. Terms differ. Read them on the incubator's own page or ask in writing.
  4. Location rules. State schemes usually need your company registered in that state. See which state's grants you can apply for.
  5. Intake dates. Many run cohorts. Check the current call on the official site.
